<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZedvjOcNOlgBtRb4ENk3MTtECZ6Z0MqpnlxKuMejionzyz099_lt0QFRHRmECurMHpzwL_4IrNYEI1yCl8H8b74j_3NSuo_k3k0uDMdzpaDJ8iZW5a-YRHO5fGeFR5QXfwM6usanPbFw/s1600/ella.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZedvjOcNOlgBtRb4ENk3MTtECZ6Z0MqpnlxKuMejionzyz099_lt0QFRHRmECurMHpzwL_4IrNYEI1yCl8H8b74j_3NSuo_k3k0uDMdzpaDJ8iZW5a-YRHO5fGeFR5QXfwM6usanPbFw/s640/ella.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
After 18 hours of (unmedicated!) labor, Ella Grey made her way into the world. There is no way to adequately explain motherhood because it surpasses anything I've ever felt before. I have felt the worst pain, the deepest pride, the most immense joy, the most intense fear, and everything in between. Basically I have felt all the feelings!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih9QATJNHPCAMj0ItT47NbjBkq-vCU12xS6PuhEvADd6CXjEaOed0KP8L8X8GkM_YvNAc0CpxerdGdC8ShyphenhyphenRyRKC0EkX8EXLO3zrzcuSF9RmkpL74fCkSWg-bht7-DycXDhRwBxbEhYiA/s1600/ella+grey.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih9QATJNHPCAMj0ItT47NbjBkq-vCU12xS6PuhEvADd6CXjEaOed0KP8L8X8GkM_YvNAc0CpxerdGdC8ShyphenhyphenRyRKC0EkX8EXLO3zrzcuSF9RmkpL74fCkSWg-bht7-DycXDhRwBxbEhYiA/s640/ella+grey.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But most of all, what I feel is that I am doing exactly what I was always meant to do. Being a mother just feels right and is my absolute favorite thing in the world.<br />

I thought I knew what kind of parent I was going to be and thought I knew how I would feel, but nothing can prepare you for when you actually become a mother. I always rolled my eyes a bit when someone would tell me that having a baby changes everything, but it is completely true.<br />

It has been the great joy of our lives to watch her grow and change over these past couple months and we feel so blessed, honored, and excited to be her parents. She truly is the light of our lives!<br />

<div>
We're having a baby!!! And we just found out last week that it is a little girl. I am the happiest I've ever been and sometimes I have to pinch myself because I still feel like it's a dream. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This morning I was standing in her room and looking outside the window. I saw beautiful flowers right in front of me, a field of cows to my right, and a coop full of happy chickens to my left. I am so thrilled that our baby will be growing up in this environment with nature all around. We can't wait to teach her about this homesteading life and I hope that she will grow to love it as much as we do. </div>

<br />
I have a busy weekend ahead, but I'm so glad I was able to carve out a little time to be creative. I feel like it is so important to have unstructured "play" time to recharge. And for me, there's no better way to recharge than this. Nature, animals, photography...give me those three things and I'm a happy girl!<br />

Case in point - just ten short days ago, David and I snuck away to the Lake of the Ozarks with some friends and were enjoying 70 degree weather.<br />

That's me, under about twenty layers of clothing. We ended up with 11 inches of snow, and this morning when I woke up the temperature was -10. That's not the wind chill, that's the actual temperature!<br />

The chickens and Emma kitty are not coming out of the coop, and who could blame them. I have been refreshing their water every several hours and taking the chickens hot oatmeal and scrambled eggs to warm their crops. Baby is hanging out in the garage and the indoor cats are watching all the action from the warm house. <br />

Duchess is built for this weather, so she is having a blast running
around in the snow. I do put her in the coop at night as well since it's
getting so cold, but during the day she is out and about. <br />

The guineas, hardy as ever, are just fine as long as they have a perch to rest on. Some of them have found their way to the coop, but others are still outside like this old timer.<br />

<br />
We're all hanging in there, but not exactly happy! It seems the snow is here to stay as the forecast does not show us getting above freezing at all, so we'll just have to get used to it for now. As I say nearly each year, spring can't come soon enough!<br />
<br />
Have you been buried in snow this winter?<br />

The only hard part was leaving our historic home full of character and charm that we had grown to love dearly and had fixed up to make our own. If only we could have just moved the house!<br />
<br />
Our home in the country is just a few years old which is awesome (the windows don't leak!), but it lacks the character that we really miss about our old house in the city. Ever since we moved out here, we've been trying to incorporate charm into our home little by little, and have always wanted to create a big built-in shelving unit on the feature wall in our living room.<br />
<br />
It took us 3 1/2 years to decide what to do, but finally we are getting started! Phase 1 was creating a focal point in the center of the room with our electric fireplace and some old reclaimed wood David received in exchange for helping out a friend with a project last summer (which made our project super cheap - can't beat that!). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGK_8USu8AcYvnJz4QzJHXCrmeW0HEHLkZrBDX9Yydr_tgk0UzOHAm3O1scKI9u2JAwaI8x0_Kni6IDGvizlUI-JCSTwgyZxeS3cbo8f5kLXFIGpWL3mpE-HDaF9ATDkTS1hG05di_a4/s1600/DSC_7011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGK_8USu8AcYvnJz4QzJHXCrmeW0HEHLkZrBDX9Yydr_tgk0UzOHAm3O1scKI9u2JAwaI8x0_Kni6IDGvizlUI-JCSTwgyZxeS3cbo8f5kLXFIGpWL3mpE-HDaF9ATDkTS1hG05di_a4/s1600/DSC_7011.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
David was the brains and brawn behind this phase of the project, so I mostly just supervised. He gets all the credit here. It turned out great!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQbQeHWEq5oYN4nos33HM516gmvpywEzncKN-UhnVMfWbQ7mxMDC7y6pSfF0HVK3fwUhf6bNtcpamRR1_DJX_hFGHWiXJ2IJpD3GnjZAkCzDPj-m-UGjGM7ZmbHhABlHyTCIKbr2dFg5o/s1600/fireplace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQbQeHWEq5oYN4nos33HM516gmvpywEzncKN-UhnVMfWbQ7mxMDC7y6pSfF0HVK3fwUhf6bNtcpamRR1_DJX_hFGHWiXJ2IJpD3GnjZAkCzDPj-m-UGjGM7ZmbHhABlHyTCIKbr2dFg5o/s1600/fireplace.jpg" height="640" width="414" /></a></div>
<br />
The fireplace is at the very center of the living room/kitchen open area and really anchors the space. We are still deciding on whether or not to put a mantle and artwork up or keep it clean and minimal as is. I think as we go along with the rest of the project we will get a better idea of exactly how we want the fireplace to look.<br />
<br />
We are getting started on the next phase right now, but this will take a bit longer since it involves more prep work with the materials. Here's a sneak peek - any guesses as to what it may be?? :)<br />
<br />

Ever since we moved out here, each Christmas we choose a tree from the woods to cut down and bring inside. They are never full, gorgeous trees, but there is something charming about the skinny, non-traditional trees that I love.<br />
<br />
We took Duchess with us this year to search for a tree and I think she may have enjoyed the hike just as much as us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3c5uKR5jVyt_VUopjR93IC0eH4pbYGLAIFMFlyC3nAX5j3h9goMooF1EzHu0fe9zc8uRKj0ixr83HSch2q_JJS7BuGueBPhw5lmUzk-yd_3tsyDw0ytlV3RgKrGkr92ndPZzPZSYnXvQ/s1600/duchie.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3c5uKR5jVyt_VUopjR93IC0eH4pbYGLAIFMFlyC3nAX5j3h9goMooF1EzHu0fe9zc8uRKj0ixr83HSch2q_JJS7BuGueBPhw5lmUzk-yd_3tsyDw0ytlV3RgKrGkr92ndPZzPZSYnXvQ/s1600/duchie.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We found a cedar deep in the woods that we decided on, and David went to work on cutting it down and dragging back to the house.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY0WkJYm1zwrp0xbZoz9mWiCCYadGZrSmwhU1uYT5WTwosZQ-ORFq6kX9lxVdOCQRxPAWvoVY_9w4RpYi-lmArHXRMhLFVPuCAT80T17yStpAdW3dTacSmXEf5iEbMYJ5VgwGAbq-l2nU/s1600/DSC_6900.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY0WkJYm1zwrp0xbZoz9mWiCCYadGZrSmwhU1uYT5WTwosZQ-ORFq6kX9lxVdOCQRxPAWvoVY_9w4RpYi-lmArHXRMhLFVPuCAT80T17yStpAdW3dTacSmXEf5iEbMYJ5VgwGAbq-l2nU/s1600/DSC_6900.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />We had to do quite a bit of trimming to the tree, but finally managed to get it just right. I'm really into the simple, natural look for Christmas decorating, so I added some white lights and called it a day. I love to pull out my vintage enamelware this time of year, and found that leftover cedar clippings and half-melted candles made a pretty display for the trunk/coffee table. I'm still adding some festive touches around the house as I get sudden bursts of inspiration! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQMAckavtDaCnTmvuLTccuKoQZFqjkflWx3FX21HpE9kJ3d-Xb1SJwod9DUICTnUTcRP1FHxMIbebj6WXFudpPtB-ShIbl_X3gYXaiOKPYllM8yk4LK9OQh_X0owO7RCUiSWEeeTO4gm0/s1600/xmas.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQMAckavtDaCnTmvuLTccuKoQZFqjkflWx3FX21HpE9kJ3d-Xb1SJwod9DUICTnUTcRP1FHxMIbebj6WXFudpPtB-ShIbl_X3gYXaiOKPYllM8yk4LK9OQh_X0owO7RCUiSWEeeTO4gm0/s1600/xmas.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another fun tradition is sending out Christmas cards with photos I've taken from around the homestead. This year, I was looking through some photos and when I happened upon a snowy photo of Duchess from last winter, I knew it was the one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSNrhcDUN4CE85jessRfiOd971Uulkj0jbjMOedraVBlek-L7GPBHoElfoX7JWGdzLq78gF39rSxR1pJFw8KEpW8miFe0ZuJOm6PpNn9fMmDYDTyKt4rduo24tv_KvpWnbzkeqm94tlMM/s1600/card.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSNrhcDUN4CE85jessRfiOd971Uulkj0jbjMOedraVBlek-L7GPBHoElfoX7JWGdzLq78gF39rSxR1pJFw8KEpW8miFe0ZuJOm6PpNn9fMmDYDTyKt4rduo24tv_KvpWnbzkeqm94tlMM/s1600/card.jpg" height="640" width="462" /></a></div>
<br />
Thankfully we haven't had snow like that this year (yet!), but we'll see how the next few months go.<br />
<br />
On a non-related note, I just wanted to say thank you if you are reading this! I know I haven't posted in a long time, so if you are still following me that's awesome :) After starting a new job this spring, I just got engulfed in my new responsibilities and trying to learn everything about my new career path as I could. I'm feeling more comfortable now and have more of a schedule figured out with balancing work and homestead demands, and have found that I really do miss the blogging part of my life. I haven't had a creative outlet in a while and haven't taken many photos at all, and that makes me quite sad to be honest. Taking photos and blogging was such a big part of my life for a couple years (as you can see if you read back through the archives) and it feels so odd that I just basically stopped cold turkey. All of that to say that I am going to try to update the blog on a more regular basis (although not as often as before) and take more photos. And of course I miss the community that I had here as well, because that is what made blogging so rich for me. So I hope you're still out there, and I wish you the happiest of holidays!<br />

I'm sure you all understand sometimes work and life just gets busy and there's not much time for anything else. My new job is going really well, but I am still working at my old job to help wind things up, so that is where much of my time and energy is focused right now. There is lots going on here on the homestead as well, so I thought I'd give you guys a quick update to show that we aren't just being lazy over here! ;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTVoWxVyIage7sQ5lm8q9OFFCSXeEx1XvrpKpK69mJA0O3UXMxUN5Zg2FLqqtZAURaFKbtyA9spv0ENZEmjRU_Zg-5TpA1jhewK4GLSFCArjjDKElbKDIkKogsIOFh5hIRkxOzA6hJdUs/s1600/DSC_5469.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTVoWxVyIage7sQ5lm8q9OFFCSXeEx1XvrpKpK69mJA0O3UXMxUN5Zg2FLqqtZAURaFKbtyA9spv0ENZEmjRU_Zg-5TpA1jhewK4GLSFCArjjDKElbKDIkKogsIOFh5hIRkxOzA6hJdUs/s1600/DSC_5469.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We finished planting the vineyard! I say "we" but actually it was 99% David and 1% me. He worked really hard on this space, from cutting down trees and cleaning up the mess, to installing the support for the vines and finally getting them all planted. It took us several months from start to finish (check out more on that <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Vineyard" target="_blank">here</a>) and we are both thrilled that the vines are in! PS - The blue tubes you see are grow tubes which act as a mini-greenhouse to get the vines growing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO16ewkCQhuIToor02bXhCdubthi91mdNpUReMVf9ip7Fc9vrrbPM0CZvBlhnPl3TwFGEphl_ZXZQPoOz12eGcFNnJENyM4hXf_g9BQW6RmWlskkMCuU5B3qmpNPa7TsSEkwn4x4r5YAY/s1600/DSC_5479.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO16ewkCQhuIToor02bXhCdubthi91mdNpUReMVf9ip7Fc9vrrbPM0CZvBlhnPl3TwFGEphl_ZXZQPoOz12eGcFNnJENyM4hXf_g9BQW6RmWlskkMCuU5B3qmpNPa7TsSEkwn4x4r5YAY/s1600/DSC_5479.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The garden is coming along very well! We have so much planted, I can't even remember it all. Again, by "we" I mean mostly David haha. This year we went a bit crazy with starting tomato seeds that we <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2013/10/homemade-living-saving-tomato-seeds.html" target="_blank">saved from our tomatoes last year</a> and had over 100 seedlings going under grow lights in the garage at one point. I ended up selling some plants to a coworker and we planted the majority of them in our garden. We didn't have enough space for them all in the garden beds, so many of them are in pots and other repurposed containers (like buckets).<br />
<br />
Our main bee hive is doing incredibly well, but our split not so much. It's having a hard time getting up and going, and we are trying to figure out what's wrong and help it along as much as we can. But we are hopeful that we will be able to harvest a good amount of honey this year!<br />
<br />
The animals are doing well and we actually gained a new <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Guineas" target="_blank">guinea</a> friend recently. One of our neighbor's guineas starting hanging around a couple weeks ago and now he won't leave. He's pretty entertaining, so we don't mind the extra company.<br />
<br />
All the plants around the house are springing back to life and it is amazing to see the transformation. After the horrible winter, I just can't get enough of all the green out here!<br />
<br />
I hope I can post again soon, but in the meantime, I just want to thank each of you who has checked in and sent sweet messages and emails to me letting me know I'm missed. It means so much that you would think of me and take time out of your day to say hello!<br />
<br />
We have a busy weekend planned, but hopefully we can get some relaxation in to recharge before the new week starts. I hope we can get in at least a little hammock time :)<br />

I didn't get a chance to post last week because I started a new job on Monday that kept me very busy. But it's good busy, because I'm loving it so far (I'm a paralegal in the real estate/finance division of a company). It's much more demanding than my previous job, and I've found it has been a struggle to balance work, homestead demands, and the blog.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU8esv_qwxiIhedEr1iWGr_lDe7TGU5v_2sjTHTRX9hX536BZDKOEFq7B9t-HESX0mtX8IaofG9FhrtyrV3YNtb5tRr5NnwlgfUE-ffMEzb6biJgVNx5bvfogC_rRWVmLQjj9oubG6iHA/s1600/DSC_5415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU8esv_qwxiIhedEr1iWGr_lDe7TGU5v_2sjTHTRX9hX536BZDKOEFq7B9t-HESX0mtX8IaofG9FhrtyrV3YNtb5tRr5NnwlgfUE-ffMEzb6biJgVNx5bvfogC_rRWVmLQjj9oubG6iHA/s1600/DSC_5415.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
We're seeing more and more signs of spring around here lately, and our garden work is in full swing. Lots of seeds planted in the garden already with tons of seedlings growing indoors. Our <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Vineyard" target="_blank">vineyard</a> is set up and ready to go when our vines arrive, which can't be soon enough! We also recently planted 30 trees (10 pecan, 10 persimmon, and 10 evergreens) as part of our <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Digging%20In" target="_blank">digging in</a> goal for the year since these trees will take many years to grow and produce for us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu8DBjxNVyVJ-uOgdOyEaoum1f42XHKqbxV3ES_6KtWU-Le2JOGRPojeVg8JY_gWNh1JAi1Xyni5qW7i5iSJXaVIhA23RzusZYo4ZmF_3C3k0r0oU7QnWEIgcYxdPshOol79NqDg5u7DM/s1600/DSC_5419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu8DBjxNVyVJ-uOgdOyEaoum1f42XHKqbxV3ES_6KtWU-Le2JOGRPojeVg8JY_gWNh1JAi1Xyni5qW7i5iSJXaVIhA23RzusZYo4ZmF_3C3k0r0oU7QnWEIgcYxdPshOol79NqDg5u7DM/s1600/DSC_5419.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course there are cats, chickens, guineas, a dog (and a husband) to feed every day, so that keeps me busy as well.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
So with all of that, the blog had to take a back seat this week while I figure things out. My good blogging buddy, <a href="http://bornambitous-bornimaginative.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jackie</a>, reminded me that blogging should be fun, not another thing on your to do list. And this week, it was more of a thing on my to do list. She knows a thing or two about balance, so I will listen to her advice. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> This one's for you, Reifyn.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I'm not sure going forward how regular my blogging schedule will be, so if I'm away for longer than normal, things probably just got a little bit hectic around here. With spring and summer coming up and the gardening work getting even more time consuming, I do see that happening. <br />
<br />
I had a few people check in on me last week to make sure everything was ok (thank you guys!) so I thought I'd just let you all know what is happening right now. I won't be around to visit you all as often as I did before, but please know that I still care and I do think about you all the time! <br />

Each Friday I write a
post with facts, photos, or stories about our chickens and guineas. If
you need to catch up, you'll find all the FFF posts <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Feathered%20Friend%20Friday" target="_blank">here</a>. </i> <br />
<br />
Now that spring is officially here (woohoo!) I can tell the girls have a little extra pep in their step. It's easy to see that they are thrilled with the warmer weather. They can barely wait to get out of their coop in the morning, and they don't want to go back in at night. We humans are ecstatic with the warmer weather, but our feathered friends are happy as well!<br />

It's still very brown out here, but there are small signs of green popping up around the house. In no time the grass will be back in and the girls will be overjoyed to chomp on fresh greens and catch bugs.<br />

They really are getting back into the groove with their egg laying, and we are collecting around a dozen eggs a day, sometimes as many as 14 eggs from our 16 girls. They are definitely earning their keep!<br />

My favorite thing in the world is sitting outside on a beautiful day while watching my chickens free range and happily scratch through the woods. I am so thrilled that soon I will be able to do just that!<br />

PS - This one goes out to my youngest follower, Grace. Hope you liked this post! :) Our Neck of the Woodshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796487269192271170noreply@blogger.com56tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6079474236547869496.post-11622745931239645712014-03-19T19:15:00.002-05:002014-03-19T19:15:43.697-05:00Bee UpdateOur bees made it through the winter! Hooray! We were nervous since this was our first winter as beekeepers and we have heard that many beekeepers have losses over the winter. One main reason why the bees die is starvation, so we left all of last year's honey in the hive for the bees. Of course being their first year there wasn't a lot of excess honey, but we did keep it in the hive just to be safe. We also began feeding them with a sugar board over the last few weeks to make sure they have enough food until they can start foraging again.<br />

<br />
We are also working on moving the hive back a little bit to sit on our new hive stand that will hold all of the future hives. In order to make sure the bees return to their hive, it is best to only move it several inches each day and take some time. This way they won't get confused and disoriented when returning from foraging during the day. Apparently they don't like change very much!<br />
<br />

<br />
It's still a little bit too cold and windy to do a full inspection of the hive, but from the population we're seeing out flying each day, we're hopeful that the hive is strong. We even saw several bees bringing pollen back today. I'm so happy that the bees made it through this harsh winter!<br />

We <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2014/01/digging-in-visiting-winery.html" target="_blank">visited a winery</a> in January to get some ideas on how to set up our vineyard and ever since then David has been working like crazy to get our space ready for the vines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZoQLfsWewhN9DbtH8tQZx2bgnY-uBTD7OHBG5mvnilrm2Vi9lL3UZTNJCide8g8WhN5W81P6BHALSumjb3UHco53lf2CaQjJXmSB6JB7c2Hg34ws23qPF5RJBnRj3rKucSOgp1lUAv4/s1600/DSC_5363.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZoQLfsWewhN9DbtH8tQZx2bgnY-uBTD7OHBG5mvnilrm2Vi9lL3UZTNJCide8g8WhN5W81P6BHALSumjb3UHco53lf2CaQjJXmSB6JB7c2Hg34ws23qPF5RJBnRj3rKucSOgp1lUAv4/s1600/DSC_5363.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the view from our back porch. If you look really hard, you can see up on top of the hill we have our space cleared and all the posts in for the vines! David gets about 99% of the credit here, since he cut down around 60 massive trees and stacked up all the wood. I helped with moving the wood that I could carry and burning some bigger sticks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMXN4tqI8RafxJRAnLFTaj9nx82tbwfNRFBQJItWFb-13XGfHhoJriqnF06QAQtL15HmTeFj-1XWMDWZ0I__EyeI-n6Y-tG0Wsh1vIZRmYptbPbwIs54T6E4fG8haiz0KHgz4_UNDIloo/s1600/DSC_5366.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMXN4tqI8RafxJRAnLFTaj9nx82tbwfNRFBQJItWFb-13XGfHhoJriqnF06QAQtL15HmTeFj-1XWMDWZ0I__EyeI-n6Y-tG0Wsh1vIZRmYptbPbwIs54T6E4fG8haiz0KHgz4_UNDIloo/s1600/DSC_5366.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you can see the posts and all the wood stacked in between the trees (yes, we got snow yesterday - ugh!) and a pile of sticks to burn still. The posts were reused from part of the rustic wooden fence that ran in front of our house.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXUDoOmqqUNw2EHCDthgdWM4uN4awpdoKAjpWhS7HoeHPIvWc926QvMRuvuzNKW-5ktZsTtI19QM7cwkoY-8YP1SjdFQ4I7WhD-Ovha-Rfkmw4Sxub2yWpVOYC-QLBNLMeXZRPOKBeX0A/s1600/DSC_5373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXUDoOmqqUNw2EHCDthgdWM4uN4awpdoKAjpWhS7HoeHPIvWc926QvMRuvuzNKW-5ktZsTtI19QM7cwkoY-8YP1SjdFQ4I7WhD-Ovha-Rfkmw4Sxub2yWpVOYC-QLBNLMeXZRPOKBeX0A/s1600/DSC_5373.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We also have bamboo placed where the vines will go in order to get an idea of the spacing. We're planting a total of 56 vines, so we need a lot of fencing and support. The vines are being shipped to us in a few weeks so we had to get the structural support in place before planting the vines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4aqQ4xSQzMPCko_JCcSFSVYJRGcVuGk0VSBwG3-6tdhywrmb7dkO3rkMPClofihEyPW3Jmu-jNP1eWHvz_M8dI8SDX3QK-DLcXHh_B9P3kc8Xt9UKverxTCsTFwvqAk8GMBQbkvl7jBo/s1600/DSC_5372.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4aqQ4xSQzMPCko_JCcSFSVYJRGcVuGk0VSBwG3-6tdhywrmb7dkO3rkMPClofihEyPW3Jmu-jNP1eWHvz_M8dI8SDX3QK-DLcXHh_B9P3kc8Xt9UKverxTCsTFwvqAk8GMBQbkvl7jBo/s1600/DSC_5372.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the view from the vineyard looking back down towards the house. We do still have some cleanup left, but for now at least the space is ready for the vines. (If you look to the right of our house, you can see our garden space. To the left of the house is the chicken compound.)<br />
<br />
Our biggest goal of all is to dig a pond on the property in the space between the house and the vineyard. We are getting quotes on the pond construction and mapping out the best size and placement for the pond. Now all we have to do is win the lottery!<br />

</i><br />
<br />
We haven't had super cold temperatures for a few weeks now (thank goodness), but for most of winter every morning I would have to chip the ice out of the chickens' water pan. It would freeze solid overnight so I'd have to break up the ice and refill with fresh unfrozen water each morning. <br />
<br />
For some reason, the chickens always went for the pieces of broken ice first before drinking the actual water. In the dead of winter, they go crazy over ice. Go figure.<br />

<br />
Eventually when they had eaten all the smaller pieces, they headed over to get a drink of water and a bite of food to start off their morning. It was kind of a funny ritual every morning to make me smile when I was freezing while breaking up chunks of ice and dreaming of warmer weather. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3-tQgS2S7dXjkUXW3bT6smspbM39dxiFAvS41XfYDp2SRRvaDU2YE3Qrj_zFmZ-ezMG6cHOnxWWoRp59I0H_s5BW7gWoHGo64geL3zm7TQui34uLBtsUma0EQC6ZX4IoQcUbQ4sVTMw/s1600/DSC_5194.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3-tQgS2S7dXjkUXW3bT6smspbM39dxiFAvS41XfYDp2SRRvaDU2YE3Qrj_zFmZ-ezMG6cHOnxWWoRp59I0H_s5BW7gWoHGo64geL3zm7TQui34uLBtsUma0EQC6ZX4IoQcUbQ4sVTMw/s1600/DSC_5194.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now that we are into weather above the freezing point, I can look back and reminisce at these photos and smile even bigger knowing that soon enough they will be foraging for grass and bugs, not chunks of ice!<br />

Spring is such a thrilling time of year, and the beginning of the gardening season is full of hope and promise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFuirmOnU0m7yhFqgEI6fYWDMU5LYl9rXQzX_E7Lx6uI-p_dC1A6U9Xvh_DbN54G_KyEMwB7SaLoKjdPqdvAbsKHp-UDZ2gxazpLmY0WzvABEnKSC5PSy2MZ97tw5zwVWZ5iPcU4Y-Ks/s1600/DSC_5329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFuirmOnU0m7yhFqgEI6fYWDMU5LYl9rXQzX_E7Lx6uI-p_dC1A6U9Xvh_DbN54G_KyEMwB7SaLoKjdPqdvAbsKHp-UDZ2gxazpLmY0WzvABEnKSC5PSy2MZ97tw5zwVWZ5iPcU4Y-Ks/s1600/DSC_5329.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
For many months now, I've been waiting rather impatiently to plant the Red Russian kale seeds that my blogging buddy, <a href="http://thelittleacrethatcould.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sue</a>, sent me last year! I'm so excited to see how they do and try this variety of kale. I'm excited about the radishes as well, because I think the sprouts are just about as delicious as the actual radishes themselves (<a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2013/05/mushroom-radish-sprout-salad.html" target="_blank">here</a> is my favorite way to use the sprouts). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG1ZtjxNpBHQKl1UazzQgbHLwgllNNM2HgyZOIi1ndgQuxMc-LQ0Uc9WpnfNeZ8WMDBFo-b4GInLk8QwbxEIZcJmnIx6MGBh0Gqz1f2XppQegkzwv0dMdXEoBrPu6OjHKaeb_OYOmMw4A/s1600/radish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG1ZtjxNpBHQKl1UazzQgbHLwgllNNM2HgyZOIi1ndgQuxMc-LQ0Uc9WpnfNeZ8WMDBFo-b4GInLk8QwbxEIZcJmnIx6MGBh0Gqz1f2XppQegkzwv0dMdXEoBrPu6OjHKaeb_OYOmMw4A/s1600/radish.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We have done a ton of work on our garden in the last year, with adding a lot of garden beds and fencing in the area to keep the critters out. We are adapting it as we go and see what works and what doesn't work from year to year.<br />
<br />
I took this photo to show how bare it looks now, because I can't wait to take another photo in a few months and compare the before and after!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjersMUt6GGhg51blEpcxRO2U_QnVIK3Iy2-xspGzlz_wvwyJN9D8h2XeY4XhP0QFA3Md6BuR4UhxoHVPiQBQlpBLYyS4gNw38ISQuQb_pVm186XEqeljR-LD4hlY-5m4QJUhL-sm6DJV0/s1600/DSC_5340.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjersMUt6GGhg51blEpcxRO2U_QnVIK3Iy2-xspGzlz_wvwyJN9D8h2XeY4XhP0QFA3Md6BuR4UhxoHVPiQBQlpBLYyS4gNw38ISQuQb_pVm186XEqeljR-LD4hlY-5m4QJUhL-sm6DJV0/s1600/DSC_5340.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We tried to stay as frugal as possible when creating the garden beds and fence, so a lot of the wood is reused from other projects or from materials given to us by family (like the green beds you see up front). So it has a little bit of a hodge-podge look to it now - let's call it rustic haha - but when everything starts growing and blooming it will really fill in and look awesome. I can't wait!<br />

We like to do coffee dates every so often to talk about what's going on in our lives and what we have planned for the future. Lots of exciting things happening for my friend and for me, so it's always fun to catch up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKH_hlDss2YdNIUm8qHACVjej6RmaT8HzFzveoBm-1NJ_g43IRxvA3gc024MijNWugKAYufgr0-AKUpMtUH4KkPPODCZYN1sOoYwi0oftgnCeEhwURx2BjGlLrcOz1xQ7q0Dh0_em-vrg/s1600/DSC_5294.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKH_hlDss2YdNIUm8qHACVjej6RmaT8HzFzveoBm-1NJ_g43IRxvA3gc024MijNWugKAYufgr0-AKUpMtUH4KkPPODCZYN1sOoYwi0oftgnCeEhwURx2BjGlLrcOz1xQ7q0Dh0_em-vrg/s1600/DSC_5294.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Even with exciting things happening, life is composed of the good and the bad. My sweet friend wanted to help cheer me up since the passing of <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2014/03/feathered-friend-friday-goodbye-roosty.html" target="_blank">Roosty</a> last week, so she came bearing a huge bouquet of mums in the cheeriest yellow color I have ever seen.<br />
<br />
I've always loved cutting and arranging flowers and find it to be very therapeutic, but something about arranging these lovely flowers was extra special.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You know there's gotta be a cat in the mix somewhere.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I thought this was just the kindest and sweetest gesture and it meant so much to me. She is always inspiring me to be a better friend and an even better person. And the yellow color did definitely cheer me up. The cats seemed to like it as well - the flowers were on the table for a whole 15 minutes before they had to be moved to a safer location!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjON5B7smSx4mrdTKAe2auU8c43Af1gAz31-CbM2zYq48Kk7yjcWF4QOn21bowoljMMOCbzfuaUgF5JP-gH_NmMYpF2WQ-AAwFz9UE-0K4gug5OAx-KTBCF0Ym_mXxxuCxxVHu7qsR0EQA/s1600/DSC_5326.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjON5B7smSx4mrdTKAe2auU8c43Af1gAz31-CbM2zYq48Kk7yjcWF4QOn21bowoljMMOCbzfuaUgF5JP-gH_NmMYpF2WQ-AAwFz9UE-0K4gug5OAx-KTBCF0Ym_mXxxuCxxVHu7qsR0EQA/s1600/DSC_5326.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Now they are placed in different rooms throughout the house so I can get a burst of sunshine wherever I go and think of my dear friend and her thoughtfulness. The world is made so much better with good friends!<br />

So much was going on around that time and <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2012/07/feathered-friend-friday.html" target="_blank">Roosty</a> was very sick, so I didn't feel right publishing a post on that day.<br />

<br />
Around Wednesday of last week, I noticed Roosty wasn't acting like his normal self. He was staying away from everyone and just standing with his head hanging down. On Thursday he was so bad that I decided to bring him into the house to try to figure out what was wrong. By Friday morning, he was lying down and not moving at all. I noticed his breathing was very shallow and I had a feeling that he wasn't going to make it through the day. I stayed with him as long as I could, but I had to go to work. So I said my goodbyes and left him. He was gone by the time I got home that night.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB00oIwGzZCZ1ujpa0gnMQZ8KPDeQfWU1kpeAa-EdkkGBkAAleuIqrJSFLwgjj8cH4JFd3JVl15qNyPkfb2ekl9Q0oDIel6jtV-NzjmYF66gDz_3vx5fan13CXQPt0YfgPUFsCnKdGw-I/s1600/DSC_7112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB00oIwGzZCZ1ujpa0gnMQZ8KPDeQfWU1kpeAa-EdkkGBkAAleuIqrJSFLwgjj8cH4JFd3JVl15qNyPkfb2ekl9Q0oDIel6jtV-NzjmYF66gDz_3vx5fan13CXQPt0YfgPUFsCnKdGw-I/s1600/DSC_7112.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Roosty was supposed to be a girl. We got him at our local feed store in a bin labeled "pullets." But since chick sexing isn't 100% accurate, occasionally a boy gets thrown in the mix as well. At first we were disappointed, but he turned out to be such a sweet boy and fit into the flock well since he was submissive to our head rooster, Cam.<br />
<br />
I told David the other day that I am really thankful that we got Roosty,
because if someone else got him expecting a girl, when he turned out to
be a boy they may have gotten rid of him. I feel like it was meant to
be for us to bring him home. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcmSd37SynrlALadR7vB-5t9ubUzeoCpsjb3vYZG7B53gboyijwVLkUEKWHtJSRWYAeUVbBFWPorFi2vMFa31AAB7r7pkgI6M3ifVLtzNia4gX8fyTIKnRViSgj-dwE0u60HJbOQ16xJ0/s1600/DSC_5680.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcmSd37SynrlALadR7vB-5t9ubUzeoCpsjb3vYZG7B53gboyijwVLkUEKWHtJSRWYAeUVbBFWPorFi2vMFa31AAB7r7pkgI6M3ifVLtzNia4gX8fyTIKnRViSgj-dwE0u60HJbOQ16xJ0/s1600/DSC_5680.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
The one thing that homesteading has taught me which I didn't really expect, is to appreciate the moment because you never know when things will change. With keeping animals, you have to expect that you will lose them at some point. It's one thing to say you realize that, but it's another to actually live it and experience it firsthand. Through all our losses, I am reminded that time with those we love, whether human or animal, is a gift and we need to appreciate it every day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXq1drk5BuaBmwQrSPU6oL6d7iqzOmW4aoqmKB-YlpS1-74P3Q9ZkUGCuyu0WibpUlubm87JoiyGdpT04N3GXXzW5ptUu0IBb56HQJ4heRqhZD0eUKF1GwTyB1vv1FONm90HpRzPuciP0/s1600/DSC_1886x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXq1drk5BuaBmwQrSPU6oL6d7iqzOmW4aoqmKB-YlpS1-74P3Q9ZkUGCuyu0WibpUlubm87JoiyGdpT04N3GXXzW5ptUu0IBb56HQJ4heRqhZD0eUKF1GwTyB1vv1FONm90HpRzPuciP0/s1600/DSC_1886x.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Homesteading isn't all sunshine and roses, even though sometimes to an outsider it may appear that way. I choose to focus on the positive because that's just my personality, but I feel that it is important to also write about the disappointments because those are just as much a part of the journey as the good times.<br />

Today I am happy to host a wonderful seed starting giveaway featuring items from their <a href="http://www.plantationproducts.com/pages/cfNKLawnGarden.cfm" target="_blank">NK Lawn & Garden</a> line of products. One lucky reader will win a 7 pot seed starter kit and ten packets of seeds!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH5_y3WWb0FF4cNHa6YNHgPDrUWM35Ur1vfows-ZMo497LgKihyBUeCDV10l_iq9VKU4jTlRjhPg_HMKbxD0Tf0Dpb0CuJOa8XkOUci_HU71gamNhUxcN2YvR_572AG-ZLEIdBCbVw1Jk/s1600/DSC_5247x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH5_y3WWb0FF4cNHa6YNHgPDrUWM35Ur1vfows-ZMo497LgKihyBUeCDV10l_iq9VKU4jTlRjhPg_HMKbxD0Tf0Dpb0CuJOa8XkOUci_HU71gamNhUxcN2YvR_572AG-ZLEIdBCbVw1Jk/s1600/DSC_5247x.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was provided with a seed starter kit and seed packets for review purposes, so over the weekend I got to planting some asparagus and pepper seeds. What I really like about the seed starter pots is how much room there is for each plant to grow. The individual pots encourage root growth and since they are made of all natural fiber, the pots can be planted right into the ground once the seedlings are ready to go outside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikNKnAtm7vnWJm1GjJ6e45vMIfvLtTQ37E56xLWCwQXLxO_19a6BCHskN_Gx8yz_XihLFR3eFUJVjb9AhtwvjbgGHH6HiJIzBv8em7a2W0QpR8LdNIJDOQ1JTAu4xFCkedB1GQ_r0itT8/s1600/DSC_5262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikNKnAtm7vnWJm1GjJ6e45vMIfvLtTQ37E56xLWCwQXLxO_19a6BCHskN_Gx8yz_XihLFR3eFUJVjb9AhtwvjbgGHH6HiJIzBv8em7a2W0QpR8LdNIJDOQ1JTAu4xFCkedB1GQ_r0itT8/s1600/DSC_5262.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
The best thing about the seeds, in my opinion, is how they are foil packed and hermetically sealed for freshness. This keeps the seeds viable and allows for higher germination rates because the seeds are less impacted by changes in temperature and humidity during storage.<br />
<br />
I also appreciated how much information is provided on each seed packet. I could easily see how many plants I can expect to grow from one packet, and get detailed instructions on how and when to plant in my area. I found this so helpful since I am still fairly new to gardening and at times unsure of what conditions each individual plant needs to grow and thrive.<br />
<br />
Gardening items from <a href="http://www.plantationproducts.com/" target="_blank">Plantation Products</a> can be found at major retailers like Walmart and Lowe's in the lawn & garden section. Next time you're shopping, I would highly recommend stopping by the garden section to browse the available products from <a href="http://www.plantationproducts.com/" target="_blank">Plantation Products</a>. Let me know if you pick up some of their items!<br />
<br />
<b>I think it is also important to note that Plantation Products does not sell any GMO seeds. You can read their GMO policy <a href="http://www.plantationproducts.com/documents/PlantationProducts_GMO_Policy.pdf" target="_blank">here</a> for more information.</b><br />
<br />
To enter the giveaway for one 7 pot seed starter kit and ten packets of hermetically sealed seeds as shown above, use the Rafflecopter form. Giveaway open to US residents only. Good luck!<br />

This recipe first caught my eye last year because the base is coconut milk, not dairy milk. I don't digest dairy very well, but I still love ice cream, so I just make my own with coconut milk since it's easier on my tummy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtjLgfRBQkRxCwanBdhD5zbyjIo9HFbfz9uBAuClIsFbAM4FWgCtnCrKeCGTs0T01aw5Smwhtozj8Jhb8Wy-LC7nfdICI4cWqpDUiHijim79CNMKtZv0lL5XDAQeVMa9Ms1JSlraJyqMw/s1600/DSC_5120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtjLgfRBQkRxCwanBdhD5zbyjIo9HFbfz9uBAuClIsFbAM4FWgCtnCrKeCGTs0T01aw5Smwhtozj8Jhb8Wy-LC7nfdICI4cWqpDUiHijim79CNMKtZv0lL5XDAQeVMa9Ms1JSlraJyqMw/s1600/DSC_5120.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Kate's <a href="http://cookieandkate.com/2013/chai-coconut-ice-cream/" target="_blank">recipe</a> calls for mixing spices with black tea, but since I already had chai tea bags in my pantry, I just used those so I didn't have to mess with all the spices. Honey is added to sweeten up the ice cream, another reason why I really like this recipe. I try to use natural sweeteners whenever I can and honey is a favorite. Hopefully this year we will be able to harvest some of our own honey from our <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Bees" target="_blank">bee hives</a> to use in future batches of this ice cream!<br />
<br />
The ice cream is perfectly delicious as is, but this time I decided to add some mini chocolate chips and walnuts on top and found that it was such a good combination. I like different textures in my food, so the chocolate chips and walnuts added a satisfying crunch to the luscious, smooth ice cream base.<br />

I'm happy that the dangerous ice is gone, but now there is a thick layer of mud to deal with. Which apparently can also be dangerous, as I've found myself sliding and nearly falling on my way down to the chicken coop several times!<br />
<br />
Due to the muddy conditions, I knew it was time to bust out the muddy boot tray again.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrTdtYijCBInECzkNkZ81jguoxNUkoUjEfDUat60QWzTiMnit9RbG3HAzu1xZShV6MVvMucqPqRKA43GLA-CAzz800K4tJvT3ipe6hKIEGelXHRH_DnHj8T2SI50mZErv1YmQ_JodxjYU/s1600/DSC_5107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrTdtYijCBInECzkNkZ81jguoxNUkoUjEfDUat60QWzTiMnit9RbG3HAzu1xZShV6MVvMucqPqRKA43GLA-CAzz800K4tJvT3ipe6hKIEGelXHRH_DnHj8T2SI50mZErv1YmQ_JodxjYU/s1600/DSC_5107.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photobombing Gizmo strikes again.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Our boot tray is simply a tray filled with river rocks. That's it! I found the plastic tray at Target a while back (it's actually a food serving tray) and the rocks are repurposed from our wedding reception way back when. They were used in the centerpieces on each table and we loved them so much that we saved them after the reception to use again in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkoyIJHZZQRk6Ha3rUBOf6811mNBxCE3rOAMDy3XPJS1ZlIfFP2ZZ5FIBf3CsuVchVjAONzT-TIWaRLU8tc439GLztGqiS4ZT7I5b7hpHmchrX5tuRYb4WwiJgKnPor5m-SZK1QBMwtS8/s1600/DSC_5113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkoyIJHZZQRk6Ha3rUBOf6811mNBxCE3rOAMDy3XPJS1ZlIfFP2ZZ5FIBf3CsuVchVjAONzT-TIWaRLU8tc439GLztGqiS4ZT7I5b7hpHmchrX5tuRYb4WwiJgKnPor5m-SZK1QBMwtS8/s1600/DSC_5113.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
By placing the rocks in the tray, the boots can drain and don't just sit in a wet muddy pile all day long. When the river rocks and tray start to get dirty, I just give everything a good scrub down. I put the rocks in a bucket, fill it up with water, and swish the rocks around a few times to remove the caked on dirt. Hose the tray out then place the clean river rocks back in and it's good to go. Easy peasy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qWEwop0mVtkLHi2CEltxoWi6A2dkEbb7V6DhHYVMohVbYloVpdFKufAgH5Z-sZJM5u5JhT1YiFFg3g3EoKagmzBaHTIXjWcJ2xlbBPlSWP03OSRY0qKjBOpYppJKX5uu8aWV6LoyZkQ/s1600/DSC_5109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qWEwop0mVtkLHi2CEltxoWi6A2dkEbb7V6DhHYVMohVbYloVpdFKufAgH5Z-sZJM5u5JhT1YiFFg3g3EoKagmzBaHTIXjWcJ2xlbBPlSWP03OSRY0qKjBOpYppJKX5uu8aWV6LoyZkQ/s1600/DSC_5109.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Our tray is located in the entryway right inside the back door, so we can take our dirty boots off right away and not track the mess throughout the house. Even though I do sweep the floors daily, this cuts down on the frequency of mopping. And that is one of my least favorite chores, so I count this simple muddy boot tray as a big win!<br />

Today's random 5 is all about eggs!<br />
<br />
1. This week two of our hens started laying again after their winter break. Isis (Easter Egger) lays green eggs and Summer (Welsummer) lays dark brown eggs dotted with speckles. It's so thrilling to find the first mint green egg of the season in the nesting box!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
2. We sell our eggs for $2 per dozen. For interested potential customers, we like to provide a colorful half-dozen starter pack to try and get them hooked. How could you not love these pretty eggs?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
3. Collecting eggs from the nests at the end of the day, bringing them inside and writing the date in pencil on the end of each egg, and arranging them in cartons is one of my favorite things ever.<br />
<br />

4. Since we always have access to delicious fresh eggs, you might expect that we eat them at just about every meal. In reality, we don't eat eggs very often. I do bake with them, but we only eat egg dishes every couple months or so. <br />

5. Right now we collect up to seven eggs each day, and I usually put them in my coat pocket for safe keeping until I get back in the house. Several times over the past couple weeks I have accidentally crunched eggs in my pocket. It makes for a pretty gooey mess. Yuck!<br />

This chickpea curry is one of those recipes for me. I recently came across it in the very back of my recipe folder and couldn't believe that I had totally forgotten about it! I hadn't made this curry in forever, so I quickly remedied that by cooking up a batch over the weekend.<br />
<br />

<u>Chickpea Curry</u><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Slightly adapted from <a href="http://www.thekitchn.com/heres-a-simple-curry-that-130340" target="_blank">The Kitchn</a></span><br />
<i><span style="font-size: small;">Serves 4-6</span></i><br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients:</b><br />
1 clove of garlic<br />
1/2 t peppercorns<br />
1/2 t whole coriander seeds<br />
2 T vegetable oil<br />
1 T red curry powder<br />
2 cups sliced potatoes (sweet potatoes work also)<br />
2 cups sliced carrots<br />
2 cups water (or stock) <br />
2 cups cauliflower florets<br />
14 oz can fire roasted chopped tomatoes<br />
14 oz can full-fat coconut milk<br />
14 oz can chickpeas<br />
2 T <a href="http://www.san-j.com/tamari.asp" target="_blank">tamari</a> (or soy sauce)<br />
1 T fish sauce (optional)<br />
1 T honey or agave<br />
2 cups cooked brown rice <br />
<br />
<b>Directions:</b><br />
1) With a mortar and pestle, grind the garlic, peppercorns, and coriander seeds into a paste. Heat the oil in a dutch oven on medium high to high heat (you want the oil very hot when you add in the paste). Fry the garlic mixture and stir until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add curry powder and fry another 30 seconds.<br />
2) Add the potatoes and carrots and stir to combine with the spices. Pour in the water and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the cauliflower, tomatoes, coconut milk, chickpeas, tamari, fish sauce, and honey.<br />
3) Bring mixture to a simmer and continue cooking until the vegetables are done, about 15 minutes. Serve the curry over brown rice with a good bit of Sriracha on top for added heat.<br />

The balance of sweet and heat in this dish is what makes it so delicious and interesting. If you can handle it, I suggest adding plenty of Sriracha on top for even more heat! Even more than the flavor, what I love best about this curry is that there are plenty of leftovers to eat for lunch the rest of the week. The mixture gets even better as it sits, so the curry tastes great for up to five days after it is cooked. I haven't frozen it before, but I think it would freeze well. Such a versatile dish!<br />
<br />
And a side note - do you have a rice cooker? I have always botched rice when cooking it on the stovetop (too sticky and gummy - yuck!) so I decided to get a rice cooker and I love it! The brown rice for this dish was cooked perfectly and I didn't have to mess with another pot on the stove. I'm hooked!<br />

I thought about some of my favorite things and decided I wanted to get sushi for lunch then hit up an antique shop. I could spend hours browsing thrift stores and antique shops, so I was happy that David indulged me a bit. I normally keep it pretty frugal, but since I had some birthday money from my generous mother-in-law I splurged <i>ever</i> so slightly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7QDoBVy3kzd4-EaFFrpPMIEEsz_fNnjK6yzg6UXnwPsdL4ZeaFs71i0XtOrKZx7-KLc3zB-kreJlGdVYuU7EefwjkyfTmlfiqHwQIisQuBQm6c9SlD7c7t9kBOGqQS12ghB0W7ZU1h9M/s1600/DSC_4972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7QDoBVy3kzd4-EaFFrpPMIEEsz_fNnjK6yzg6UXnwPsdL4ZeaFs71i0XtOrKZx7-KLc3zB-kreJlGdVYuU7EefwjkyfTmlfiqHwQIisQuBQm6c9SlD7c7t9kBOGqQS12ghB0W7ZU1h9M/s1600/DSC_4972.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
My most expensive item was the set of pink bowls from the 1950s. Last time we were at the antique shop I noticed them, but the $15 price tag stopped me from picking them up. It was a little more than I wanted to spend. But this time since I had some extra money and they were still there, I went for it! I tried to get the clerk down to $10 for the set, but he wouldn't budge. So I happily handed over the $15.<br />
<br />
My glass jelly jar was $5, and each small jello mold tin was $1. The ice cream scoops were $3 each and I just had to pick them up because I have had ice cream on the brain recently! I can't wait to make some and scoop it into my pretty pink bowls. I basically got each of these items because of how well I thought they would photograph with food!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I am always on the lookout for anything chicken related, so I was excited to find this sweet little figurine for $2. It does have a hole in top that would probably fit a tapered candle, so it also serves a practical purpose as well as just being so darn cute.<br />
<br />

</i><br />
<br />
In the summertime, I am constantly taking photos of our chickens. Bright green grass and colorful flowers provide such a <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2013/07/feathered-friend-friday-evening-stroll.html" target="_blank">gorgeous backdrop</a> to all my pictures. And the chickens just look so darn pretty in the middle of a lush summertime landscape!<br />
<br />
This winter has been so stark that I have struggled with taking my camera out to the coop. The past few weeks I've just felt completely uninspired by the lack of color and freezing temperatures. I really missed snapping shots of my girls and boys, so I was searching for any bit of inspiration when this happened.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfpnImD4-vTyao9N4PHjZopa1xfdVpJ2fMuBgyxvk1FT6WKteMcdqTevhymFKvPGHCQBa4sJm67nXxUBnnzrHV0ocIixVL73FS0e0ATKaC5JO1FYovtcl0V0fe2arENLJDbOKrEUzVVJY/s1600/DSC_4931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfpnImD4-vTyao9N4PHjZopa1xfdVpJ2fMuBgyxvk1FT6WKteMcdqTevhymFKvPGHCQBa4sJm67nXxUBnnzrHV0ocIixVL73FS0e0ATKaC5JO1FYovtcl0V0fe2arENLJDbOKrEUzVVJY/s1600/DSC_4931.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I noticed the most beautiful light streaming in through the "hay room" where everyone gathered to get a drink and bite to eat early one morning after being let out of the coop. I immediately sprinted back inside the house (careful not to slip on the ice) and grabbed my camera so I could get a couple shots. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqSApYUJ1qDlEgx3osYNRAKIwWWNqMOc0_KirwSd6Z1MxkTyBvc0D4CgoKR1wyqBf61P9n_hkvFYUFUw3k4As7rPf2jAjLNWC1O-uehF93DxlVbb8lSq3SjLNUkYeB_0jigZ5JicbsPwQ/s1600/DSC_4935x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqSApYUJ1qDlEgx3osYNRAKIwWWNqMOc0_KirwSd6Z1MxkTyBvc0D4CgoKR1wyqBf61P9n_hkvFYUFUw3k4As7rPf2jAjLNWC1O-uehF93DxlVbb8lSq3SjLNUkYeB_0jigZ5JicbsPwQ/s1600/DSC_4935x.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my favorite things about photography is how I've learned to see things differently and take time to notice what I used to just glance over in my haste. Now I am constantly finding beauty in unexpected places and I feel such a rush when I can capture something in a way that makes others see the beauty in it as well.<br />
<br />
So in the dead of winter I may not have a colorful landscape to inspire me, but now I know that if I just keep my eyes and mind open, the light will always find its way back in.<br />

It was my kind of celebration - yummy snacks, good friends, delicious cake, and some awesome gifts. I even got a happy birthday serenade accompanied by David on the ukulele.<br />

<br />
The centerpiece of any good birthday celebration is the cake, and I knew exactly which cake I wanted for my birthday. We've always celebrated birthdays in my family with chocolate cake, and this is the absolute best recipe I've found for the perfect chocolate birthday cake.<br />
<br />
<u>Perfectly Chocolate Birthday Cake</u><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Recipe slightly adapted from <a href="https://www.hersheys.com/recipes/recipe-details.aspx?id=184&name=HERSHEY%27S-PERFECTLY-CHOCOLATE-Chocolate-Cake" target="_blank">Hershey's</a></i></span><br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients:</b><br />
For the cake -<br />
2 cups sugar<br />
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour<br />
3/4 cup dark cocoa powder<br />
1 1/2 t baking powder<br />
1 1/2 t baking soda<br />
1 t salt<br />
1 1/2 t instant espresso powder <br />
2 eggs<br />
1 cup milk (I use soy or almond milk)<br />
1/2 cup vegetable oil<br />
2 t vanilla extract<br />
1 cup boiling water<br />
<br />
For the frosting -<br />
1 stick of butter<br />
2/3 cup dark cocoa powder<br />

1/3 cup milk (I use soy or almond milk here as well)<br />
1 t vanilla extract<br />
<br />
<b>Directions:</b><br />

2) Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder in a large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pan.<br />
3) Bake 35 - 40 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool completely.<br />
4) For the frosting, melt butter and stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add vanilla and additional milk if needed.<br />
5) Spread frosting over cake evenly and top with rainbow sprinkles.<br />

The amazing thing about this cake is that it actually gets better the longer it sits. The chocolate flavor intensifies and the cake gets even more moist as time goes on. I think I've eaten this cake up to a week after it was baked and it was still delicious. Keeping it tightly covered at room temperature does the trick.<br />

</i><br />

This winter has obviously been an extreme one for most of us, and we definitely haven't seen a colder winter here in Missouri since we got our first flock of chickens four years ago. The <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Chickens" target="_blank">chickens</a> and <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/search/label/Guineas" target="_blank">guineas</a> are hanging in there and being good sports, but I can tell they are getting just a little bit tired of all this wintry weather - just like the humans are.<br />

Last weekend we got some snow as you can see in the photo above, then a couple days later we got a lot of ice on top which has basically turned our world into a giant ice skating rink. The temperature this morning was only seven degrees, so the ice isn't going anywhere anytime soon.<br />
<br />
The other day I was giggling at the guineas as they were slipping and sliding as they tried to walk across the run, then karma got me back as I found myself falling flat on my butt while trying to feed the chickens. I think the guineas laughed a little bit. Luckily I had tons of layers on so my fall was padded and didn't hurt!<br />

Even in this tough winter, our young hens are amazingly still producing eggs for us. All season long we've been consistently getting between three and six eggs each day, so we have plenty of eggs for us and some to sell which helps with the feed cost. <br />

For the most part everyone is still in good health, but <a href="http://www.ourneckofthewoods.net/2014/01/feathered-friend-friday-cam-protector.html" target="_blank">Cam</a> has developed frostbite on the tips of his comb and wattles because they are so large. And some of the chickens are sneezing and snotting a bit, but hopefully they will clear up when the weather turns a bit warmer.<br />
<br />
It will eventually get warmer, right???<br />
