Berry Overload

I picked a lot of berries this past weekend!


Saturday morning started early - met Heather at 6:45 to pick cherries in Fruitland. The cherries are small, about the size of marbles, with such a sweet taste. I pitted them all and put them in the freezer until I figure out what to do with them. Nothing was wasted - I collected about 1/2 cup of cherry juice in the pitting process! Will probably end up freezing the juice as well until I find a good drink recipe that calls for fresh cherry juice.

Next up, I met my family for some berry picking at Blue Berry Hill Farm in Cobden, IL. We picked strawberries first and I got almost enough to fill a flat! Then we went up the hill to pick blackberries. Next weekend we plan to pick blueberries if they are ready!

We've been gorging on the strawberries and blackberries the past few days. Nothing better than hand-picked fresh berries!

  1. Pretty photo, gal! And, yum! You know what, I didn't pit our cherries so I ate them. Well, Andy ate a few, but I probably at about 95% of them. Yep, I was a greedy little pig! Bet ya' built up some biceps with all that picking!!

    1. It was almost like I couldn't stop! I sat back, watched some "Fringe" on Hulu on my laptop, had my colander full of cherries, and my disposable spit cup for my cherry seeds. It was a pretty sloppy sight, but I relished it, haha. You decided on a recipe for your cherries?

    2. Haha! Awesome. Not sure on a recipe for the cherries yet. But I want to make some kind of lemonade or juice drink with my cherry juice so I'm working on that now!

  3. The strawberries would go great in homemade strawberry daiquiris. Yum. And the blackberries would go great in an Amaretto Sour. My friend used to have a bottle of blackberry juice that we used to make Amaretto Sours with. Yum.

    1. Oooh, good idea on the daiquiris. We already ate all the blackberries. We have some strawberries in the freezer, so when you stay with us next month we'll make a batch of daiquiris!
