A Faithful Companion

One of my favorite things that came out of our move to the country was crossing paths with Sylvester. He started coming around pretty soon after we moved to the house but he was so very shy. I thought he looked hungry so I tried feeding him, but he ran away as soon as I got close. Eventually I was able to coax him onto the back porch for some food, and he hasn't left since.

Up until just a couple months ago, we thought he was the neighbor's cat. She told us they had a black and white cat so we just figured he was coming to our place for a visit and a second helping of dinner. But we recently learned that their cat is a female, and Sylvester is definitely a boy. I was secretly thrilled to discover that he is all mine!

Sylvester always follows me everywhere I go. He waits for me in the mornings to go down to the chicken coop (and he has to get in cuddles with Duchess - he loves her so much!) and follows me back up to the house when the morning chores are done. In the evening he hangs out with us while we work in the garden and he helps Duchess protect the chickens when they are out free ranging.

But one of my favorite things about Sylvester is our walks in the woods. Last night after the rain ended I was itching to get down to the creek and splash around in the water. He followed me all the way and waited patiently beside the creek until I was ready to move on.

During our expeditions through the woods, he prefers to walk behind me. I just love looking back and seeing him following close behind.

He really is such a great companion with a laid back, cool attitude. Occasionally he does like to make his presence known and can meow louder than any cat I've ever met! Of course when I hear his cries I come running. I guess I am a faithful companion to him as well.

Do you have any faithful animal companions?

  1. We have a male tuxedo cat too and though he is old now about 12 he is the best vermin hunter. I never have rodent problems. Our other cat is a total sloth and never even catches bugs. Love that you have this guy around. He is so cute.

  2. Aw, so sweet! We have two cats that are brother and sister--I got them way back when I was finishing up college and working at a vet's office. Someone brought them in as orphans so I bottle fed them and have taken them with me on all sorts of trips as our family's moved around. At heart though, they're farm cats. Cuddly ones at least. :)

  3. He looks so similar to my cat! My cat isn't a great companion though. He is pretty lazy and just lays around most of the time. I did have many cats like Sylvester growing up on the farm. They would follow us everywhere! Even out to the hunting stand where they would curl up at our feet and on our laps and keep us warm during deer hunting season.

  4. He sounds like a great and faithful companion! It's great that he follows you everywhere you go. We have a cat too, but she has her own plans most of the time, lol!

  5. He is so cool......I love his "yes...I am cool" expressions. I love my cats.....they are wonderful companions. When I walk to the creek my cats follow also but they are so funny because they are freaked out the entire time....lol.....they are use to the yard and the yard only....lol. So glad that he and you are such great friends....sounds like a perfect match. Have a great week!

  6. Oh my gosh he's cute, and I laughed at the last picture because he looks very content to be a part of the family as well. :) I'm glad you found each other. :)

  8. stray cats can really be the sweetest ever :) once tame, they are forever friends. We have only been blessed with 2 in the last 15 years here, both males. both lovely.

Sylvester looks like a sweet lil bo :)

  9. What a handsome boy. I think he would make any walk in the woods more fun. Around here, a house of 5 cats, Annie is my constant companion. Second in line, Audrey. They are both wonderful 'people' cats.

  12. That's a great story. I love that Sylvester found you and you found him.
I have a big white fluffy companion. Her name is Basil ( like the herb) and she is a 10 year old West Highland White Terrier. She was my first baby! She is my shadow. :)

  14. He is a beautiful cat! We once had a wonderful cat named Nick, who followed us as we walked our dog in the city, where we used to live. I would look back, and there was Nick, faithfully following. How we miss him, he eventually died here at the farm.

  15. What a gorgeous kitty. The way he follows you around sounds more like a dog than a cat. I have my faithful dog Bear, who accompanies me on many of my hiking adventures.

  17. I just love the way God knew we would need faithful companions from the animal kingdom. I have had so many wonderful dog and cat companions. My old chocolate Lab takes every step I do. I had two house cats that would do the same. It is so hard when they pass. I am so glad you were open to allowing Sylvester to be part of your home. He does look like the cartoon Sylvester....lol.. Great Post Tammy! I have missed all your wonderful stories...Blessings!

  20. Great photos Tammy! What an adorable companion:) my two Springers are my little buddies. When I'm home by myself or on a walk, they are always keeping an eye on my every move.. they don't want to miss anything and never want me to slip away without their knowing:)

  21. So sweet. We have a faithful companion, Harley drives me crazy! He's always getting into mischief and making colossal messes. You can have him! (I will secretly be sad when he's gone, but he's too much!)

  23. What a great story! My Australian shepherd, Buster, is my faithful companion. Sometimes a little too faithful, he follows me everywhere and is always under my feet (as I type this he is laying under my desk). Outside when I work in the garden, the ducks are my companions. They follow me around the yard, forage through the dirt when I turn the gardens and sit next to me when I am watering, weeding or planting. :)

  25. I agree with Lisa. I think it's great that he chose you. :-)

  26. What a special kat, I had one like him who would follow me everywhere too. We have a 12 year old tabby she is quite the character.

  27. Sylvester is the name of a cartoon cat, isnt it? He is pretty. What a nice companion and a good feeling to have him following you. He has your back, I am sure! Great post and cute photos.

  28. Oh, he is the sweetest little guy ever! You have some great photos of him - he's very photogenic. :)

  29. Oh, he's so cute. I love his name and his little white mustache. Your pictures of him are just wonderful. I can't decide which is my favorite!

  30. What a precious companion. Especially sweet that he follows you when you walk in the woods. He is a keeper.

  31. Aww! Sylvester is so handsome! Don't those wild ones warm your heart the most! (Especially when they finally decide they can trust you!) We had one feral that came with the property, the following Spring we found out it was a female, and a mommy! I love them all!

  32. Sylvester sounds like such a great companion - and a very handsome one, at that!

  33. I love that he follows you around like a dog. Cats are usually so aloof. We have 2 dogs- a newf and a newf border collie mix and 2 cats. 3 of our animals are all black and one kitty is a tortie. All of our fur babies get along with our real baby which is awesome.

  34. Sylvester is one lucky feline! We had a stray cat around once a long time ago. Our kids were little and they found him out in the edge of our yard and brought him to me. I always wanted a cat exactly like him and I told the kids and my husband "I'm keeping this cat even if I have to hide him in the bathroom." We did post found pictures of him for his rightful owner to claim. But I am so glad no one claimed him. He became our 4th child and we called him Baby Cat.

  35. I guess he needed a home as much as you needed a cat. He sure is a petty boy. Sometimes these foundlings make the best companions.

    ReplyDelete
  36. He's got the sweetest expression! I have had many, many faithful companions and still do. My hubby jokes that when I 'cross over' I will be greeted by a zoo! They make the best of friends and love so unconditionally. I can't imagine life without my 'faithful companions'.

  37. Sylvester sounds like a lovely companion, and looks gorgeous. My companion is Frankie the sausage dog of course! Though she probably thinks I'm her slave.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh man, look at those eyes! He is absolutely gorgeous. I don't have a companion anymore. After my dog passed (5 years ago), I just didn't have it in me to replace him. He was around for 15 years and I just don't think I'm ready for another pup yet.

  39. I love that he has a mysterious past! It's like he's your secret totem or spirit animal! He has a lovely face. Apart from our naughty chicks we only have visiting animals (we do a lot of dog sitting of my mother in law's border collie). The next door neighbour's cat does like to run across our beehive and appear at second storey windows to scare the bejesus out of us as well! We also have something unwelcome living in our ceiling, but we don't like to think about it. :P

  40. See I am a total cat person and this is one of the reasons why. Sylvester is absolutely beautiful and what a wonderful companion he seems to be :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the white lips! I have a stray black cat around my house. It won't get within ten yards of me and the only times I see it is when I'm looking out the window, or catching a glimpse of it streaking away. I just call it The Black Cat. It never bothers the chickens so I don't mind it being around.
There's also a siamese cat, who is a chubby little guy. I think he has a home.

  42. Aw seems like he is exactly where he is meant to be too :) What a sweet and cute guy! Animals, all kinds sure make the world a better place, such amazing love...

  43. He is such a handsome boy! And I love how you found each other too! I don't know who is luckier, but I feel lucky knowing both of you:)

Interestingly, Willow had been a stray-and I don't know if that's the reason why, but she will never go first-she always has to follow. She's pretty timid at times. I need to post a new picture of her-she's still looking good at 16!

  44. What a great cat! Love your writing.

  45. Aw! We had a black and white cat that would go on walks with us too. He'd bounce along behind or beside us, climbing trees sometimes. He was QUITE a character. Unfortunately he went out one afternoon and never returned home when he was just 2-years-old. That week 2 other cats and a small dog disappeared so we - in the neighborhood - suspect a larger wild animal was roaming through the area. It was very sad for us to lose Patches.

  46. Reminds me of my Tippy and Hazel! They love to walk with me :) If they happen to miss me heading out, I of course have to call and let them know I am leaving. They always catch up really quickly!

  47. Oh Tammy I loved hearing about you and Sylvester ! The dogs are my faithful shadows ...but all the animals here are my great companions :)
