Happy Trails

Last summer we got our property logged, so the woods are a big mess right now. Before the logging, we made several different trails through our 20 acres of woods and loved to take walks together each evening. Logging ruined our trails, and we were pretty depressed about that and avoided the woods altogether for a while. It was just too painful to see our property in shambles. But recently we decided to begin work on constructing new trails, and I'm happy to say that we just finished up one trail!

I say we loosely, because David did all the work, I was just along for moral support. Last night he was with his band at their first parade of the season (they won 1st place, woohoo!) so he didn't make it home until after dark. I decided to walk the trail after dinner to unwind and get a little exercise. Since David wasn't home to walk it with me, my faithful companion Sylvester joined in for the hike.

I decided to take my time during this walk and focus on my surroundings. I noticed a few things I hadn't seen before. Funny how that happens, when we take the time to slow down and be present in the moment.

When was the last time you allowed yourself to slow down and just live in the moment?

~Tammy

PS - Don't forget to visit Daisy, Staci and Amber today for their posts in the Homemade Living series. Next week I will share my post along with Mary and Jackie.

  23. We logged our woods two winters ago. I have to say it crushed my spirit for a while and still does from time to time. I cried when I first saw the destruction in my playground. But I will say that more light allows different things to grow that didn't have enough light before and things will eventually get back to a normal state as the earth takes care of itself. Luckily our trails weren't too damaged. I totally understand!

  27. Yay, for the first place win! I just came in from watering the chickens. That was pretty low keyed and relaxed. I detoured into the garden on the way back to the house and ate a few tomatoes. :-) But, I do love the looks of your wooded trail.

  28. I deliberately take time to focus on the nature and my kids (and the way they interact with it) when we're walking the public trails (which we do often). Kids naturally notice things I never would in a million years! One of my favorite characteristics they possess. :)

I'm glad you guys have a new trail cleared, and congrats to your husband and the band he's in for coming in 1st!

  31. I LOVE it when I notice something new that I haven't seen before.
My big lesson taken home all week long this week, is that good energy is contagious. Always good energy when I visit your blog, Tammy! :)
Logging is one of the biggest industries in our area.. I understand the mess! It's amazing to see everything come back, though.

  34. Every single day. I practice a yoga lifestyle, and it teaches you that the present is all there is.

Beautiful trail! I suppose my beaten path to my chicken coop counts as a trail, right? ;)

  37. WOW!! 20 acres! How wonderful to just be starting out and have such a lovely piece of land and home. You could start planting some bulbs out in the woods for next spring and other native flowering plants along the trails like wild azaleas and dogwoods. I'm trying to think of other wild flowering plants or trees you could get started along your trails - magnolia trees?

  38. Outdoors, fresh air...no better way to relax. Logging really can tear up the place, glad you were able to get a walking path back
